Wednesday, February 14th, 2007

listening to podcasts just got easier. i scan 55 rss feeds quickly in Netvibes.com and it used to allow you follow enclosure links to dock into its own flash player. Well it still does that but now it shows items/posts with enclosures in the initial panel view. The icons are links to play or download the media.

netvibes is a feature rich web based rss reader / feed manager; supports OPML in/out and has tabs also!

stop the lights - RTÉ take on web 2.0

Monday, February 12th, 2007

RTÉ is to digitise its entire archive and is looking into featuring user-generated content on its website, siliconrepublic.com reports

when RTÉ press released on their podcasting output in Dec 2006 SR asked me for a comment.

Brian Greene, head of the podcasting representative body in Ireland and winner of the Irish Internet Association’s podcaster of the year award, said RTÉ’s adoption of the medium was a positive development. “The entire independent sector is still larger than the RTÉ output, but the fact that they’re doing more podcasting is good,” he said.

Greene pointed out that the broadcaster is sitting on decades’ worth of material that could be of interest to listeners if it was made available via podcast. “Let’s see some older archives, original music and more diverse programming,” he suggested.

Balcony TV unplugged by YouTube

Monday, February 12th, 2007

YouTube has deleted the account of Balcony TV. The vidcasters 220+ videos are off line and Balcony TV are not sure why. breaking details at BalconyTV.com
in a statement there Stephen O’Regan says

BALCONY TV REMOVED FROM YOUTUBE!!!
ALL VIDEOS REMOVED
Its true we are very sorry to say. We have just checked the BalconyTV YouTube account and it seems all our videos have been removed and our account has been disabled. The first we sensed of this was a couple of weeks ago when the Dirty 9s video was removed for apparent copyright reasons. The same happened with Super Jimenez and Barry McCabe the following week.
We are guessing that all videos will now be inactive on various groups MySpaces…we are very sorry about this.
For most acts we still have the raw footage of performances…but alas we have lost a few along the way due to technical mishaps.
This is a shock to us as it may be to you.
Watch this space…and keep reading the BalconyTV Blog for updates.

Blooming eck.

Broadband TV News writes

In a remarkable announcement, the satellite operator SES, European Space Agency ESA and German avionics research institute DLR have claimed there is such a thing as spent Ku-band satellites sitting idle in orbit, without any use or purpose. So why not use them to offer mobile radio services to cars for ‘many more years’?

what a wonderful use of junk space hardware - i wish

and in the words of Billy Bragg “I saw two shooting stars last night I wished on them but they were only satellites. It’s wrong to wish on space hardware. I wish, I wish, I wish you’d care”

RTÉ RADIO NOW IRELAND’S LEADING PODCASTER

Thursday, December 14th, 2006

[this release written about and covered in silicon republic & ENN & briangreene.com]

RTÉ Radio announced today (13 December) that it publishes 30 podcasts, involving over 60 hours of programming, each week - more than any other Irish provider and many are regular entries in the Irish Top 30 podcasts chart.

The Tubridy Show, Playback and Conversations with Eamon Dunphy have all charted on Apple’s i-Tunes Irish site since they were first made available in October of this year. Other entries include the daily Morning Ireland compilation and the award-winning Documentary on One series.

Speaking about the podcasts, Paul Russell of RTÉ Radio’s New Media Unit says,

“RTÉ Radio has increased its podcast output to meet the needs of audiences who can’t always be around when programmes are first aired on the radio. The popular download format gives listeners the opportunity to subscribe to regular programme selections and listen to them on their computer or audio player whenever they want.”

RTÉ Radio’s podcasts cover numerous genres of programming including news, sport, arts, education and science so there is something for all tastes. From January, RTÉ Radio plans to podcast Macbeth in Monaghan, a series designed as a study aid for Leaving Cert students, and the broadcaster will also podcast several RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta programmes which will vastly increase the amount of Irish language programming available.

All of RTÉ Radio’s podcasts are available from RTÉ’s award-winning website, RTÉ.ie and with so many popular new podcasts, Apple i-Tunes has given RTÉ Radio 1 its own page on the i-Tunes site.

The growth in podcasts is one element of RTÉ Radio’s move into the digital age. Another is the news that RTÉ’s four fm services, RTÉ Radio 1, RTÉ 2fm, RTÉ lyric fm and RTÉ Raidio Na Gaeltachta are now being aired in the Greater Dublin and the north east areas on the Digital Radio format known as DAB or Digital Audio Broadcasting.

Date: 13 December 2006

JNLR reveals shift to Podcasts

Saturday, September 23rd, 2006

[Reg Req] [Link] Irish Indo reported September 7th… In Dublin, iPod ownership grew 95pc in the April to June period, compared with the same three months of 2005, with 37pc of under-35s in the city owning one. In Cork, iPod ownership surged 121pc, and 31pc of the population own them.

… these new technologies provided opportunities for radio stations and other media, giving rock station Phantom FM as an example of a broadcaster exploiting podcasting.

RTÉ audience Council on podcasting

Saturday, September 23rd, 2006

To the RTÉ Audience Council on june 7th 2006
Podcasts of Radio Programmes

[link] JP Coakley gave a very interesting presentation on podcasts, including a demonstration, as well as other developments which are taking place. There are many audio podcasts available from RTÉ Radio and a video podcast (Crap Rap) has begun recently – however, it was pointed out that bandwidth can be expensive for the broadcaster and that video podcasts use a great deal of bandwidth. Also, a trial is currently underway to send RTÉ 1 and RTÉ 2 TV live to mobile phones. The best way forward is to move FM into the digital age via DAB as well as developing our online offering. Podcasting still has only a very small number of users but it is not expensive to produce if it is recycled content which has already been generated for radio and television. The question of rights was raised and it was confirmed that rights organisations, record companies etc are anxious to protect their rights.

yes its early days for podcasts but must they only be recycled non music programmes? the BBC is making video and audio podcasts specially for download.YouTube(verb) the TV we pay for with our licence fee (see Late Late Show on YouTube) , the kids will see it on the Bebo flash box TV.

Which mobile operator is streaming RTE TV ? is it DVB-H? does it add up to the audience council quality mark of being “Free To Air”?

Bandwidth is not as expensive as electricity like the €1M+ it costs to power 252LW

DAB is old hat technology invented in 1987 (19 years ago) DAB is sub quality codec cul-de-sac RTE should run away from. Have RTE looked at DRM for FM? there are of 600 HD radio stations on air now in the USA in the MW/FM bands.

Radio Bebo anseo agaibh

Friday, September 22nd, 2006

Radio listeners across Ireland will join internet users worldwide next Monday, as they tune in to the first episode of a new series focusing on the social aspects of the internet.

It’s the first time an Irish radio series has been devoted exclusively to the phenomenon of “online social networking”, of which the best known example in recent months has been Bebo. What’s more: all 59 episodes of the show will be in Irish.

The programme is called An Líonra Sóisialta, which translates to The Social Network. It will broadcast a 12 minute episode each day for 12 weeks.

So far, 7 Irish radio stations have confirmed that they will broadcast the show and its producer believes several more will join over the next few weeks as the series gathers steam.

Thanks to the internet, however, the show will be available to anyone who wants to hear it, anywhere in the world. An Líonra Sóisialta will also be a “podcast” – a downloadable MP3 sound file that users can listen to on their PC, or copy to a mobile device to enjoy at their convenience.

An Líonra SóisialtaThe new series is the brainchild of independent producer Conn Ó Muíneacháin from Ennis, County Clare. After a successful career in local radio, he gave up broadcasting for the computer industry. 10 years later, he sees the two fields converging as technology has put the media into the hands of anyone who has access to the internet.

Conn will co-present the show with Fiona Ní Chéirín, a native of An Spidéal, Co. Galway, and a recent graduate of the multimedia degree programme at Tipperary Institute.

The series has been provisionally approved for funding under the “Sound and Vision” scheme operated by the Broadcasting Commission of Ireland.

The 7 radio stations which have confirmed their participation in An Líonra Sóisialta are: Flirt FM in Galway, Raidio na Life in Dublin, Ocean FM (Sligo, North Leitrim, South Donegal), Clare FM, KCLR (Kilkenny and Carlow), Wired FM in Limerick, and Raidio Fáilte, Belfast’s new Irish language station which launched last Friday.
